Flat, one-dimensional characters can quickly drain the life out of a story. To craft truly compelling characters, you must move beyond stereotypes and delve into their complexities, contradictions, and hidden depths. Give them a rich backstory, even if it’s never explicitly stated. Explore their motivations, fears, desires, and the internal conflicts that drive their actions. What do they want most, and what stands in their way? Crucially, allow them flaws and vulnerabilities; perfection is rarely relatable. Readers connect with authenticity, recognising echoes of the human experience within your fictional creations. A character who feels real, even if fantastical, will resonate long after the final page. Share a unique trait you’ve given one of your characters in the comments below.
