A story without conflict is like a cup of tea without the tea bag. It’s just hot water. Conflict is what drives the plot forward, reveals character, and keeps the reader turning the page. We need to teach our students the different types of conflict: man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. self. Tom Sherrington’s ‘modelling’ is key. Let’s show them how conflict is introduced and resolved in a short story. Then, get them to identify the main conflict in their own story. It’s about teaching them that a little bit of trouble is a very, very good thing.
